His Grace Iakovos (Tsigounis) of Militoupolis is an assistant bishop in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. He is the first Australian-born bishop to serve in Australia.

Biography

Born in 1966, the future bishop was the eldest of three sons to parents who hailed from Sparta. He grew up in Winston Hills, attended church in Parramatta and completed school at Model Farms High School in 1983.

In 1992 he started studies at St Andrew's Greek Orthodox Theologial College (Sydney, Australia). He completed his Bachelor of Theology in 1996 before completing a graduate course at the Sydney College of Divinity.

He was ordained to the diaconate in 1993 by Archbishop Stylianos, becoming his protodeacon. He also served as editor of the Journal of the Theological School until 2001.

In 1999, he was ordained to the priesthood. His name was changed at this point to Iakovos to honour the late Principal of the Halki Theological School, Iakovos of Iconium. He was elevated to Archimandrite in 2000.

After his ordination to the priesthood, he served at the Cathedral of the Annunciation, Redfern, and at the Parish-Community of the Resurrection at Kogarah. In 2002, he was transferred to Melbourne, where he was appointed rector of the Holy Unmercenaries Church in Oakleigh.

On January 11, 2011, he was unanimously elected bishop with the title of Militoupolis, which was the title that Archbishop Stylianos had prior to arriving in Australia. On February 20, he was consecrated by Archbishop Stylianos, Bishop Ezekiel, Bishop Seraphim and Bishop Nikandros.

He presently serves alongside Bishop Ezekiel in the Second Archdiocesan District of Victoria and Tasmania.
