His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos (Michaleas) of San Francisco is the metropolitan bishop of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. The Archdiocese is under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Life

Gerasimos Michaleas was born on August 21, 1945 to Nicholas and Anastasia Michaleas in Kalamata, Greece where he completed his primary and secondary education. After emigrating to the United States of America, he enrolled at the Hellenic College in Brookline, Massachusetts in 1970 from which he graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He continued his education at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, earning a Master of Divinity degree with High Honors in 1976. After graduating, he was appointed Registrar of Hellenic College/Holy Cross, a post that he held until 1979.

On December 16, 1979, Gerasimos was ordained a deacon and was called to serve as Archdeacon to Archbishop Iakovos of America, a position he held until 1996.

In 1984, Dcn. Gerasimos enrolled in the Master’s Degree Program in Counseling and School Psychology at Boston College, in Boston Massachusetts. After receiving his degree in 1986, he continued in the doctoral program of the Boston College School of Education from which he received his Ph.D. in School and Counseling Psychology in June 1993. His doctoral dissertation was a study of intellectual deficits in a severe alcoholic population entitled, Intellectual Deficiencies in a Substance Abuse Population.

Dcn. Gerasimos taught for a number of years at Hellenic College as well as Northeastern University, where he holds the title of Senior Lecturer. At the same time he was appointed a staff member at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Boston, serving in the Department of Psychology from 1991 to 1995.

In 1990, he was again appointed the Dean of Students at Hellenic College/Holy Cross, a position he held until 1998, when he became Director of Admissions and Records. In 2000, he was named Administrative Assistant to the President of Hellenic College/Holy Cross School of Theology, Father Nicholas Triantafilou.

In December 2001, he was elected Bishop of Krateia by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. After his consecration he was appointed by Archbishop Demetrios of America as Chief Secretary of the Holy Eparchial Synod of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. As Chief Secretary, he assisted the Synod in the promulgation and realization of its decisions.

On February 22, 2005, the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate elected Bp. Gerasimos to be the Metropolitan of San Francisco. On April 2, 2005, Metr. Gerasimos was enthroned by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America at the Ascension Cathedral in Oakland, California.
