Eritrea is a country bordering the Red Sea on the horn of Africa. Christianity came to the area in the early centuries after Christ through Alexandria. During the Christological controversies of the fifth century the majority of Christians in the area followed the miaphysite formula. They rejected the Fourth Ecumenical Council of 451 in Chalcedon, and joined the Coptic Church of Alexandria.

Today, the majority of the Christians in Eritrea are members of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church that was granted autocephaly by the Coptic Patriarch of Alexandria. The Archdiocese of Aksum of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria serves the Chalcedonian Christians of Eritrea.
