Epiphanios (Mahairiotis) of Ledra

His Grace, the Most Reverend Epiphanios (Mahairiotis) of Ledra is the titular Bishop of Ledra and abbot of the Holy Monastery of Machairas under the jurisdiction of the Church of Cyprus.

Life

The future bishop Epiphanios was born in Nicosia, Cyprus in 1971. After his elementary education he attended and graduated, in 1988, from the Pancyprian Gymnasium in Nicosia. He continued his education at and graduated from the Pedagogical Academy in 1991.

After receiving his university degree, Epiphanios worked in the public elementary education system for four years as, at the same time, he enrolled in the Theological Faculty of the Aristotle University of Thessalonica.

In 1995, Epiphanios entered the Monastery of Machaira as a lay-brother. In 1996, he was tonsured a monk with the name Epiphanios. Entering the Holy Orders, Mk. Epiphanios was ordained deacon on December 26, 1999 by Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol. His ordination to the priesthood was on March 26, 2000. He was elected a member of the Abbot's Council of the Monastery of Machaira in July 2004.

On September 11, 2004, Archimandrite Arsenios, the abbot of the monastery, died unexpectedly in a crash of a helicopter taking him to Mount Athos with a party that included Patriarch Petros VII of Alexandria. On September 29, 2004, Fr. Epiphanios was elected abbot of the monastery, succeeding Archim. Arsenios.

On May 22, 2007, Archimandrite Epiphanios was elected by the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus as titular Bishop of Ledra. On June 23, 2007, he was consecrated bishop and enthroned Abbot of the Monastery of Machaira by Archbishop Chrysostomos II of Cyprus.
