His Beatitude Patriarch Diodoros (Karivalis) (1923-2000) served as primate of the Church of Jerusalem from 1981 to 2000.
Life
The future patriarch was born Damianos Karivalis on the island of Chios. At the age of 15, he moved to Palestine, completing his education in 1943. He was ordained a deacon in 1944 and took monastic vows the same year. Diodoros was ordained to the priesthood in 1947.
On November 10, 1962, Diodoros was consecrated as Archbishop of Hierapolis within the Patriarchate of Jerusalem. On February 3, 1981, he was elected as Patriarch of the Holy City of Jerusalem and All Palestine.
The patriarch died on December 19, 2000, from complications related to diabetes.
