Life

The future patriarch was born Damianos Karivalis on the island of Chios on August 14, 1923. At the age of 15, he moved to Palestine, and there completed his education in 1943. On September 22, 1944 he was ordained a hierodeacon by Archbishop Basileos of Ascalon at the Tomb of the Savior in Jerusalem.
