The Holy Diocese of Nyeri and Mount Kenya is a diocese under the Archdiocese of Nairobi of the Patriarchate of Alexandria. Its territory includes the parishes and missions located in central Kenya (i.e. the counties and tribes bordering Mount Kenya).

History

In the 1980s, His Beatitude the Archbishop Anastasios of Albania, then Bishop of Androusa (1972–1992) and Vicar of East Africa, founded a female monastery in Nyeri, Kenya. Unfortunately, his election to the Church of Albania in 1992 marked the end of that monastery, which wasn't able to sustain itself. On November 24, 2015, the see of Nyeri was founded together with Kisumu as a secondment of the Archdiocese of Nairobi. In 2019, the blessed nun Johanna from the Holy Skete of Archangel Michael in Missouri founded a new monastery dedicated to Saint Anna in Nyeri. At that time, it was reported that two Kenyan nuns were living in a monastery in Greece, and would soon come back to Kenya to serve in the new monastery, which now received aid from Greece. Besides the monastery, the diocese runs an orphanage and school which hosts over two hundred children in Nyeri.
