History

Kisumu is the sixth-largest city of Kenya. It is one of the largest cities of Western Kenya, as well as being one of the oldest settlements in the country. The first ecclesiastical structure to incorporate East Africa (Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Kenya) was the Archdiocese of Irinoupolis in 1958. On November 24, 2015 the Diocese of Kisumu was established under the now-called Archdiocese of Nairobi by a Patriarchal and Synodal Decree by His Beatitude the Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria encompassing all the western part of Kenya, together with the Diocese of Nyeri in the surroundings of Mount Kenya.
