The name Demetrios (Δημήτριος) is derived from the name of Demeter, a pagan goddess of agriculture from ancient Greece.

The best known St. Demetrios is St. Demetrios of Thessaloniki (d. 306), also known as "the Great" and "the Myrrh-flowing" (October 26).
