The name Demetrios (Δημήτριος) is derived from the name of Demeter, a pagan goddess of agriculture from ancient Greece.

The most well known “Demetrios” commemorated by the church is St. Demetrios of Thessaloniki (d. 306), also known as "the Great" and "the Myrrh-flowing" (October 26)
