Rev. Hmk Nicholas (Manovitch) was the founding priest of St Michael Orthodox Church, Dunedin. He appears to have received ordination from a bishop in Canada that was outside the Orthodox Church, then went to New Zealand where he encouraged the Orthodox Syrians to found St Michael's, and went to Australia where he had close ties to the Bolshevik group in Brisbane. He was arrested for extortion, demanding outrageous amounts of money for baptisms and weddings, and disappeared from the religious scene when Fr Paul Korchinsky came to Australia, at the request of the Russian Imperial Consul-General. He died in 1925 and is buried in Queensland.
