==Life==
His Eminence Metropolitan Archbishop Athenagoras was born George Angelo Aneste Born on [[September 17]], 1941 in Chicago, Illinois. On September 17, 1941. Upon completing George Angelo Anastasiadis received his elementary and High School high school education in Chicagobefore beginning his theological education at [[Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology (Brookline, His Eminence entered Massachusetts)|Hellenic College/Holy Cross Seminary ]] in Brookline, MassMassachusetts. Following his first year of studies, he transferred to the Theological School of the University of Athens, Greece ( in 1959-1965) where he received his Masters of Theology Degreein 1965. Fr. His Eminence Athenagoras also pursued graduate studies at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor Campus) where in 1973 he received a Master Masters Degree in Russian Literature.
In 1965, His Eminence George was [[ordination|ordained ]] a Deacon [[deacon]] on [[December 19]], 1965 at the Annunciation Cathedral of Chicago, receiving the ecclesiastical name, Athenagoras. In 1966, Dn. Athenagoras was appointed deacon and secretary to His Grace Bishop [[Timotheos (DecHaloftis) of Rodostolon]], in Toronto, Ontario Canada. 19On [[July 21]], 1967, 1965) and Priest he was ordained a [[priest]] at the Parish [[parish]] of St. George in Toronto, Ontario Canada (July 21, 1967).
Following his ordination to the priesthood Fr. Athenagoras served a number of [[parish]]es including Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, London Ontario Canada from 1967 to 1970, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Ann Arbor, Michigan from 1970 to 1963, St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church, Niles, Illinois from 1976 to 1978, and St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Flushing, New York from 1979 to 1982.
In 1966 His Eminence August 1973, Fr. Athenagoras was appointed as Deacon and Secretary to His Grace Bishop Timotheos Chancellor of Rodostolon, in Toronto, and upon his ordination to the Priesthood he served Diocese of Chicago of the Parishes of: Holy Trinity [[Greek Orthodox ChurchArchdiocese of America]], London Ontario Canada (1967-1970), Stwhere he served until January 1979. Haralambos Athenagoras represented the Greek Orthodox Churchin the midwest in a number of capacities, Nilesassisted in administering the vast region of the diocese, Illinois (197 6-1978)and served as General Secretary of the Clergy Laity Congress of the Archdiocese of North and South America, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Flushing, New York (1979-1982)which convened in Chicago in July 1974.
In August Upon the direction of 1973, His Eminence was appointed as Chancellor Archbishop [[Iakovos (Coucouzis) of America|Iakovos]], Fr. Athenagoras chaired the Diocese Committee of ChicagoClergy and Young Adults that restructured the Senior GOYA, where he served until January 1979. In his capacity as Chancellor the Young Adult program of the Diocesearchdiocese, His Eminence represented that, in 1975, was established as the Greek Orthodox Church in Young Adult League (YAL) and that wrote the midwest in a number of capacities, assisted in administering YAL Manual which defines the vast region work and activities of the DioceseYAL to this day. Also during 1975, and served as General Secretary of His Eminence Archbishop Iakovos appointed Fr. Athenagoras the Clergy Laity Congress first National Director of the Archdiocese of North and South Americanewly established Young Adult League. In this capacity, which Fr. Athenagoras convened the first YAL Conference in Chicago in Philadelphia during July of 19741976.
Upon the direction On [[August 22]], 1982, Fr. Athenagoras to be was the guest speaker at St. Patrick’s Cathedral of New York on the occasion of the celebration of the first National Director 1,200 anniversary of the newly established Young Adult League[[Seventh Ecumenical Council]]. In this capacity FrAs [[auxiliary bishop]] to the Archbishop, Bp. As an Auxiliary Bishop to the Archbishop, Metropolitan Athenagoras also administered the Greek Orthodox Parishes of Connecticut and Up-State New York and served as the Overseer for St. Basil’s Academy. In 1996, His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew asked requested Bishop Athenagoras to go Hong-Kong and in behalf of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to pursue the establishment in Hong Kong of a new [[Orthodox Metropolitanate of Hong Kong and Southeast Asia|Metropolitan Archdiocese of Hong-Kong and all All of South East Asia]] on behalf of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. In After establishing the new Metropolitan Archdiocese, in November of that year, Upon accomplishing this task, Metropolitan 1996 Bp. Athenagoras was directed by the Ecumenical Patriarchate, to officially [[enthronement|enthrone ]] the newly elected Metropolitan [[Nikitas (Lulias) of Dardanellia|Nikitas]] as the first Metropolitan of this newly established the new Metropolis. On December 2nd , 1996, Bishop Athenagoras was unanimously elected by the Holy and Great Synod of Constantinople to the newly established Metropolitan Archdiocese of Central America and the Caribbean. He was enthroned on January 25, 1997. The jurisdiction of the Metropolitan Archdiocese includes the Countries of Mexico (where His Eminence resides), Venezuela, Colombia, all the Countries of Central America (Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador) and the Islands of the Caribbean, including Puerto Rico, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Cuba.  Since then, His Eminence travels unceasingly to the various Countries of the region, bringing the message of the Orthodox Church to an ever growing number of individuals and groups, seeking to embrace the Orthodox Faith.
On [[December 2]], 1996, Bp. Athenagoras was elected unanimously by the Holy and Great Synod of Constantinople to the newly established Metropolitan Archdiocese of Central America and the Caribbean. He was enthroned on [[January 25]], 1997.
