Archdiocese of Tripoli
The Holy Archdiocese of Tripoli and All Lybia is a diocese under the jurisdiction of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa. Its territory includes the parishes and missions located in nation of Libya and in the area of Egypt called Marsa Matrouh.
The see of Tripoli was established as Archdiocese of Tripoli and All Barbaria in 1866 by a Patriarchal and Synodal Decree. In 1884, with the election of Abp Ignatios, the see gained continental grounds and was renamed Archdiocese of Lybia and All Africa. In 1908, due to the founding of the five new archdioceses of Ptolemais, Aksum, Leontopolis, Pilousion and Nubia, the see lost its status as the sole archbishopric of the Alexandrian Church and received the name Archdiocese of Tripoli and Northern Africa. In 1958, the archdiocese was merged with the Archdiocese of Carthage. In 2004, the territory of the archdiocese was restored and modified only to include all of the nation of Libya and the area of Egypt called Mersa Matruh, receiving its current name.
