Archdiocese of Cyrene

The Holy Archdiocese of Cyrene, also Archdiocese of Kyrini, is a diocese in Egypt under the jurisdiction of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa. The metropolis includes the area of Marsa Matrouh in Egypt.

History

The diocese began, in 1990, as the titular Diocese of Kyrini (Cyrene) for the Patriarchal Exarch of Alexandria to the Church of Greece, the current Patriarch Theodoros; and in 1999, as the titular diocese for the Patriarchal Exarch of Alexandria to the Church of Russia, Athanasios. On October 6, 2009, the Diocese of Cyrene was elevated to an active metropolis of the Patriarchal Throne.
