Prior to the formation of the Diocese of Madagascar, the territory of the diocese was part of the Archdiocese of Zimbabwe. On September 23, 1997, the Diocese of Madagascar was established by Patriarchal and Synodal decree. During the November 21, 2012 Fall meeting of the Holy Synod of the Church of Alexandria the see of Madagascar was elevated to archdiocese under the name Archdiocese of Madagascar and Indian Islands. On October 9, 2019 the archdiocese received its current name.
