His Eminence Metropolitan Anthony (Gergiannakis) was the first bishop of the Diocese of San Francisco of the Greek Archdiocese of America.
Life
He was born on March 2, 1935 in the village of Avgeniki on the island of Crete. He attended the Halki Theological School and was ordained a priest in September 1960. On June 7, 1979, he was enthroned as the first bishop of the then Diocese of San Francisco. Five weeks after being diagnosed with Burkitts Lymphoma, he passed away on December 25, 2004 in San Francisco at the age of 69.
