The Anavathmoi (Hymns of Ascent, sometimes spelled Anabathmoi) are a series of hymns sung after the hypakoe and preceding the Prokeimoenon of the Gospel reading during Orthros. They find their origin in the Ascension Psalms developed in Jewish worship from the ascension to Jerusalem after captivity and, later, sung at each step leading up to the Jewish temple in Jerusalem.

On Sundays, the Anavathmoi follow the tone of the week set forth in the Octoechos cycle, unless one of the Great Feasts falls on a Sunday. On these days, as on weekdays, the Fourth Mode Anavathmos, "From My Youth," is chanted instead.
