His Beatitude Patriarch Diodoros (Karivalis) served as the patriarch of the Church of Jerusalem from 1981 to 2000. He firmly supported the traditionalists of the patriarchate.

Life

The future patriarch was born Damianos Karivalis on the island of Chios on August 14, 1923. At the age of 15, he moved to Palestine, and there completed his education in 1943. He was tonsured a monk in March 1944 on the island of Chios with name Diodoros. On September 22, 1944 he was ordained a hierodeacon by Archbishop Basileos of Ascalon at the Tomb of the Savior in Jerusalem. He was then assigned to the Basilica of the Nativity of the Lord in Bethlehem. Dn. Diodoros was ordained to the priesthood on October 5, 1947 by Archbishop Eirenarchos at Golgotha.

On November 10, 1962, Fr. Diodoros was consecrated Archbishop of Hierapolis within the Patriarchate of Jerusalem. After his consecration he served for a period as the representative of the Patriarch of Jerusalem in Amman, Jordan. On February 3, 1981, he was elected Patriarch of the Holy City of Jerusalem and All Palestine. He was enthroned on March 1, 1981 in the Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem.

During his patriarchate, Patr, Diodoros strongly supported the traditionalists of the patriarchate. However, he negelected his Arab-speaking flock, causing others to undermine his reputation.

In later years, his health deteriorated due to diabetes. His infirmity advanced such that he was only able to attend church in a wheelchair. Patr. Diodoros died on December 19, 2000, from complications that were related to his diabetes. He was buried in the Cathedral of the Holy Apostles on the Mount of Olives on December 22, 2000.
