Christminster or Christ the Savior Monastery was a Western Rite monastery of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR), established in Rhode Island in 1993 with the blessing of Archbishop Hilarion, then Bishop of Manhattan, who authorized Dom James M. Deschene (formerly the prior of the Monastery of Our Lady of Mount Royal) to continue the Western Rite mission of Mount Royal under the title of Christ the Saviour Monastery or Christminster. It was located in Niagara Falls, NY. It has since left ROCOR and joined the Orthodox Archdiocese of America, an Archdiocese not recognized by any canonical body.

History
Founded in 1910 as an Old Catholic monastery, Mount Royal's mission and work continued under Old Catholic auspices until 1962. In that year the community was received into the patriarchal Russian Orthodox Church by its American exarch, Bishop Dositheus (Ivanchenko) of New York. For several years, the monks of Mount Royal staffed a Western Rite chapel in the Russian Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Manhattan, later moving to Woodstock, New York. Bishop Dositheus' successor, Archbishop John (Wendland), blessed and confirmed the Western Rite observance and mission of Mount Royal and the leadership of its abbot, Dom Augustine Whitfield.

In 1975, under Abbot Augustine, the monastery was received into the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia by Archbishop Nikon (Rklitzsky), who again authorized and blessed its mission and observances.

In 1993, upon the retirement of Abbot Augustine, Christminster was founded in Rhode Island with the blessing of Bishop Hilarion to carry on the work of Western Rite Orthodoxy in the ROCOR Synod.

In 2013, in an extraordinary session of the ROCOR Synod, several resolutions were passed as to limit the Western Rite. As a result of this, the monks associated with the monastery left ROCOR and returned to the jurisdiction they resided in prior to their union with ROCOR, which is currently not in communion with any canonical Orthodox jurisdiction.

I grew up in the Evangelical church. In college I became disenfranchised with the movement and sought for a non-denominational form of Protestantism. Through the internet I encountered the Orthodox faith and was chrismated at the Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Protection in New York City (OCA) on December 13th, 2015. Almost two years later on November 30th, 2017, I was ordained/tonsured a reader by His Eminence Archbishop Michael of New York and New Jersey (OCA) at St. Andrew's Orthodox Church in Dix Hills, Long Island. In December 26th, 2022, I was married to my wife in the Metropolitan Church Agioi Anargyroi in Nea Ionia, Greece, my wife's home parish.
RdrAndrewhttps://en.orthodoxwiki.org/index.php?title=Talk:Christ_the_Savior_Monastery_(Niagara_Falls,_NY)&diff=130005Talk:Christ the Savior Monastery (Niagara Falls, NY)2022-02-05T02:06:25Z
RdrAndrew:

Do we have a template for the information box for American monasteries like the Australasian monasteries? - Aristibule
:It's exactly the same. Just change everything after an '=' to what you'd like (say 'ROCOR' after Jurisdiction). Also, I put in 'WR' after Musical Tradition in the St Petroc entry, mainly because I could see a better place for it. -- Pistevo 21:25, 2 November 2005 (CST)
Thanks. And a reminder, it is Saint Petroc, not St Petroc - a mistake made by the webmaster for page on the Archdiocesan webpage (Fr. Michael was depending on student volunteers at that point). Saint Petroc has an Anglican/Sarum musical tradition, Christminster uses Benedictine Gregorian and some Ambrosian. - Aristibule

When I moved to Buffalo I had the intention to visit this monastery, but before I was able to and tried to look into it for more recent information, since most online information on this monastery is out of date, I discovered that it was led by a so called Archbishop Anthony Bondi, who left ROCOR and apparently brought this monastery with him. It's actually unclear if this monastery even currently exists in any form. Once I discovered they left Orthodoxy (from asking some clergy and others involved in the western rite), I did not make any efforts to check if the building listed on google maps currently has any activity.

I edited this page to reflect its noncanonical status as I believe it is important to have this information out there, as someone may wish to visit (as I did), and they should be readily able to know that it no longer exists as an Orthodox monastery. But I only put the bare amount of information to convey that; I don't know any details beyond that. If someone knows anything about this or is able to discover the circumstances that led to this monastery's apostasy, feel free to add it in, or give the account to someone who can add it in if you don't have an account. --RdrAndrew (talk) 02:06, February 5, 2022 (UTC)
RdrAndrewhttps://en.orthodoxwiki.org/index.php?title=Talk:Christ_the_Savior_Monastery_(Niagara_Falls,_NY)&diff=130004Talk:Christ the Savior Monastery (Niagara Falls, NY)2022-02-05T02:05:43Z
RdrAndrew:
