St George Free Serbian Orthodox Church, in Forrest, Canberra, Australia, is a parish in the Holy Synod in Resistance's Diocese of Sydney and New South Wales, and is currently served by Fr Dragan Saracevic.

Founding and Hiatus (1955-1992)
St George Free Serbian Orthodox Church was formed in 1955, served by Fr Dusan Popovic. In 1963, the church experienced some unspecified difficulties, during which time a group of former Yugoslav Royal Military officers registered the 'Free Serbian Orthodox Church St George, Inc' organisation with the ACT government, an organisational structure that continued until 1992.

The parishioners acquired land in the suburb of Forrest, built a church building, a hall which they call to this day 'Serbian Centre Draza Mihailovic', and a monument to Cetnik (Royal Yugoslavian Armed Forces) General Dragoljub 'Draza' Mihailovic, the first of its kind anywhere in the world.

The First President of the Church-School Community (in 1955) was Vojislav Miletic, who, together with his wife Jelena, became a major benefactor to St Sava Monastery in Elaine, Victoria.

The interior of the church was painted by Czech artist Karl Matzek in the 1970s and 1980s, primarily in the Western mural style.

Serbian Patriarchate (1992-2008)
Since 1992, when the schismatic 'Free Church' came into the Church of Serbia, it has been visited by several canonical Orthodox bishops, including the Serbian Patriarch Pavle in November 2004.

During the early 1990’s, the Church was fortunate to be recognised amongst the Australian Capital Territory's Heritage Listed sites and remains a civic icon of Canberra to this day. Fr Jakov Jovic served the church from 1992, and was succeeded by Fr Stanisa Ostojic in 2004.

In August 2006, Bishop Milutin removed the antimension from the altar of St George's. At an unknown date, the antimension was replaced. Fr Nikola Bilic succeeded Fr Stanisa as the parish priest during this year.

In 2007, the church was blessed with the restoration of the frescoes that line the ceiling and walls. These frescos have drawn many tourists to Canberra to the church, sharing in the beauty of Serbian Orthodoxy depicted in these frescoes whilst learning about several significant events that shaped our Serbian Orthodoxy. Fr Nikola Bilic concluded his service during this year, without immediate successor.

Holy Synod in Resistance (2008-present)
In March 2008, Bishop Irinej removed the antimension from the altar for the second time in two years, authorising for chains to bar the main gates. It is reported (by whom?) that this is due to a dispute, variously between the property trustees and/or with the majority of regular parishioners.

Following this dispute, the parish broke away from the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Australia and New Zealand (New Gracanica Metropolitanate), and reverted to its original name of St George Free Serbian Orthodox Church. During 2009, the Parish faced the decision to be amalgamated into the newly formed Organisation established by Bishop Irinej or to seek acceptance elsewhere.

Choosing the latter option, the Parish has been accepted into The Holy Synod in Resistance, an Old Calendar Church based in Greece, receiving a blessing from the St. Cyprian and Justina Monastery, Greece. The current parish priest, from 2009, is Fr Dragan Saracevic.

A parallel parish administration aligned with the Serbian orthodox Church also exists, with Fr Jakov Jovic installed as parish priest by Bishop Irinej. They hold services at New Kalenic Monastery in Canberra

Raskolnic is an exceedingly insulting term. People get killed over it. It should never be used by truely Christ-like people.

First off, the Patriarchal Diocese has the Serbian name 'EPARHIJA AUSTRALIJSKO-NOVOZELANDSKA', which translates as 'Diocese of Australia and New Zealand'. If it were 'in Australia and New Zealand', it would be 'EPARHIJA U AUSTRALIJI I NOVOM ZELANDU', which it isn't.

Furthermore, removal of Raskolnik and Schismatic serves to airbrush the facts: the 'free church' was a schismatic organisation created by a defrocked bishop. It WAS schismatic, and calling it something else merely legitimises it.

for further info on this, see the blog antiglupost

:Regarding the name for the patriarchal diocese - no arguments.
:Regarding Free/Schismatic: I would think the term on this article should be to call it by its legal names, ie Free Serbian Orthodox..., perhaps with a small 'formerly schismatic' or something like that - raskolnic is improper simply because it's not an English word. The suitable place for discussing the merits and/or problems of the former diocese would be on its own article, which this article would link to, and would have (consistant with the whole idea of OW) both sides listed. An example of how this would work can be found on the SCCOCA article. 23:18, May 20, 2006 (CDT)
Balance!!
chrisg 2006-05-22-1304 EAST
:!!! "godless collaborationists" as a balance to 'considered schismatic'?! The balance to this would be 'self-deifying' or something similar!
:Disregarding the history and justifications for a moment: according to the MCB, it is not the Church of Serbia which must be justified, but the part that broke away (again, justified or otherwise is not at issue). The arguments of both sides should be placed in its own article, or at the least in the articles of Church of Serbia and the article for the New Gracanica Metropolitanate (whenever that may be written). 22:24, May 21, 2006 (CDT)
Bishop of which diocese?
Currently the article says that Bishop-elect Irenej was elected to the Patriarchal diocese. Would someone be able to confirm that such is the case? The reason I ask - the previous two bishops were elected to the New Gracanica diocese, even though, afaik, both were elected from within the Republic of Serbia (or, at least, the general region - certainly not born in the 'diaspora'!). Thanks, — edited by Pιsτévο at 06:56, June 30, 2006 (CDT)
Bishop Irinej and his seat
As one of Bishop Milutin's readers, I quote Bishop Milutin:

'Bishop Irinej will be Hierarch of the Patriarchal diocese, and administrator of the New Gracanica diocese'

I hope this clears it up.

As for New Gracanica always having a bishop up to now, it was mainly due to the threat of a renewed raskol. The threat now no longer exists as much as it once did.
The Serbian Orthodox Church in Australia and New Zealand, headquartered in Canberra, ACT, and Elaine, VIC, is the descriptive term of two parallel dioceses in Australia and New Zealand: the Patriarchal Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Australia and New Zealand; and the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Australia and New Zealand, New Gracanica Metropolitanate. The joint see will be, until October 2006, headed by Milutin (Knezevic). At the May 2006 Holy Synod, Hieromonk Irinej (Dobrijevic), was appointed to head the Patriarchal diocese, and administer the New Gracanica diocese.

History
Prior to 1992, the Serbian Orthodox in Australia and New Zealand were under two seperate dioceses: the schismatic (until 1992) Free Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Australia and New Zealand, administered firstly by a metropolitan who resided at New Gracanica Monastery, Illinois, USA, and then by a local bishop who resided at St. Sava's Monastery (New Kalenic), Canberra, ACT, and the larger Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Australia and New Zealand, which was within the Church of Serbia and presided over by a bishop resident at St. Sava's Monastery, Elaine, Victoria.

In 1992, an acceptance by the Church of Serbia of the schismatic group on the condition of altering their 'Free' name to 'New Gracanica Metropolitanate' meant that there were now two directly overlapping dioceses in Australia and New Zealand, which were administered by two bishops, one each in Elaine and Canberra. In 2000, Bishop Nicanor became the first sole bishop in Australia and New Zealand, being appointed reigning bishop of the New Gracanica Diocese and also administrator of the patriarchal diocese. In 2003 Bishop Milutin was appointed bishop of the New Gracanica diocese and administrator of the patriarchal diocese.

Recent History
In 2006, Bishop Milutin was appointed Bishop of the newly-formed diocese of Valjevo following the separation of the Sabac-Valjevo diocese, and Hieromonk Irinej Dobrijevic was appointed in his place. Bp. Irinej's ordination to the episcopate is scheduled for 15 July 2006 at St. Mark's Cathedral in Belgrade, and his enthronement in Australia on 20 October of the same year.

The Serbian Orthodox Church in Australia and New Zealand, headquartered in Canberra and Elaine, is the descriptive term of two parallel dioceses in Australia and New Zealand: the Patriarchal Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Australia and New Zealand; and the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Australia and New Zealand, New Gracanica Metropolitanate. Bishop Milutin is the current hierarch of the New Gracanica diocese, and administers the patriarchal diocese.

In 1992, a reconciliation between the Church of Serbia and the New Gracanica Metropolitanate meant that there were now two directly overlapping dioceses in Australia and New Zealand, which were administered by two bishops, one each in Elaine and Canberra. In 2000, Bishop Nicanor became the first sole bishop in Australia and New Zealand, being appointed reigning bishop of the New Gracanica Diocese and also administrator of the patriarchal diocese. In 2003 Bishop Milutin was appointed bishop of the New Gracanica diocese and administrator of the much smaller patriarchal diocese. In 2006, Bishop Milutin was appointed Bishop of the newly-formed diocese of Valjevo following the separation of the Sabac-Valjevo diocese, and Hieromonk Irinej Dobrijevic was appointed in his place Statement from the Assembly of Bishops

From 1963-1992, a group of former Yugolav Royal Military officers registered the 'Free Serbian Orthodox Church St George Inc' organisation with the ACT government, acquired land in the suburb of Forrest, built a church building, a hall which they call to this day 'Serbian Centre Draza Mihailovic', and a monument to Yugoslav General Dragoljub 'Draza' Mihailovic, the first of its kind anywhere in the world.
Since 1992, when the schismatic 'Free Church' came into the Serbian Patriarchal fold, it has been visited by several canonical Orthodox bishops, including the Serbian Patriarch Pavle in November 2004.
His Grace Bishop Nikanor was ordained into the Episcopal rank in 1984, receiving the title of (Vicar) Bishop of Hvostno (Vicar to the Serbian Patriarch).
Following the repose of the Serbian Patriarch German, he was elected Bishop of Upper Karlovac. He was forced to flee his diocese with his flock in 1995 during the ethnic cleansing of Slavonia, Dalmatia and Lika committed by Croatian and NATO forces. After a brief stay in the Zica diocese, he was elected Bishop of Australia and New Zealand and enthroned in January 2000.

In 2004, His Grace was elected Bishop of Banat, following the election of then Bishop of Banat Hrizostom to the vacant Zica diocese.
